Defending champions Rangers hit back to earn a 1-1 draw with Celtic on Monday to stay four points ahead of the "auld" rival in the Scottish Premier League.

Mark Viduka fired Celtic ahead after 18 minutes before 60,000 fans at Celtic Park and, although he also hit the post and Slovak teammate Lubomir Moravcik twice hit the Rangers crossbar, the visitor gained a point thanks to a 28th minute leveller by Billy Dodds.

The result means that Rangers have 44 points from 17 games and Celtic has reached its halfway point in the season with 40 from 18 after its first tie of the season.

Even though there were 14 different nationalities on the field and only four Scottish-born players, the Old Firm derby game was as committed as ever with referee Hugh Dallas handing out five yellow cards.

But at least the experienced World Cup official didn't suffer the same fate as the last time he refereed a Celtic-Rangers game at Celtic Park when he was felled and bloodied by a coin thrown by a fan.
