The cold weather has continued to disrupt the sporting programme, with nine of today's 27 FA Cup ties and seven Scottish Cup ties called off as a result of frozen pitches.

Coventry City's third-round tie against Tottenham is the pick of the cancelled matches so far, with many games facing pitch inspections this morning. In Scotland, Berwick Rangers were, temporarily at least, denied the chance to repeat their famous 1967 Cup win over Rangers.

The widespread disruption of the horse racing calendar continued, with all four of today's turf cards – at Sandown, Uttoxeter, Haydock and Musselburgh – called off. But racing should go ahead on the all-weather surfaces at Lingfield and at Southwell, which has taken over the "matinee" card scheduled for its sister track at Wolverhampton.

The icy weather has not been confined to Britain, with London Irish's European Shield rugby union tie at L'Aquila in France last night called off. More postponements are expected from a busy programme of Shield and Heineken Cup action this weekend, while at home several of today's National League fixtures have been cancelled.

With milder weather forecast tomorrow, there will be late decisions on most of the Northern Ford Premiership rugby league fixtures, with only Keighley v Doncaster and Swinton v Dewsbury definitely off so far.
