Daniel Agger pays to send Denmark homeless team to the World Cup in Chile

Former Liverpool defender donated around £2,100 to help the team

Daniel Agger has paid for Denmark’s homeless football team to fly to the World Cup in Chile.

The former Liverpool defender, now with Danish side Brodby, has paid £2,100 to help the eight-man squad play in next month’s tournament after hearing they were struggling to pay the bill.

"It is typical of Daniel to think of others," said Frits Ahlstrøm, who works for the charity Ombold that helps organise the team, on their website.

"The day after the friendly match against Turkey I spoke to him at the national team's training camp in Elsinore, he asked how it went with Ombold.

"When I replied that we were still missing 40,000 krone, he responded without hesitation: 'I'll give it to you,' then I contacted our administration. It turned out that within the past few days had received 20,000 krone in donations. "

"When I informed Daniel that we only lacked 20,000 krone, he said: 'You just tell me where and when to spend the money; and also if there is anything else I can do.'

"There is no substitute for class and Daniel has it on as well as off the field - as a player and person."

Founded in 2003, the annual tournament has been won twice by Scotland.

Last month Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic donated around £30,000 to send a Swedish learning difficulties team to their World Cup in Brazil.
