Once upon a time Ajax played functional football within an overbearing system. Then Rinus Michels came along and created a way of playing that married the relationship between the individual and the collective responsibility of the team and totaalvoetbal was born.

Ajax are as famous for this expansive style of play as they are for their production line; the list of players blessed with an Ajax education make Oxford graduates look like a room full of Julie Myerson's offspring in comparison, such are their achievements.
The players eligible for selection who didn't make it include Danny Blind, Edgar Davids, Marc Overmars, Jari Litmanen, Aron Winter, Clarence Seedorf, Gerrie Muhren, John van 't Schip and Michael Laudrup, to name just a few, but who would have made your Ajax starting XI?
