Football in Brief: Hamann walks out on first job; Beckham eyes final US flourish; Adam denies sectarian charge; Russian players' fury at tunnel attack
Tuesday 08 November 2011
The former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has resigned as manager of Blue Square Premier side Stockport. Hamann undertook his first management assignment at Edgeley Park this summer with the promise of new investment from businessman Tony Evans, but a deal failed to materialise. "Having been introduced to the club by Tony Evans, I presumed that the takeover by him would have taken place," Hamann said. "Promises were made which did not take place. I feel therefore unable to continue."
Beckham eyes final US flourish
David Beckham's LA Galaxy will face Houston Dynamo in the MLS Cup final on 20 November after defeating Real Salt Lake 3-1 at home in the semi-final. The former Spurs player Robbie Keane scored Galaxy's third as Beckham, whose contract is expiring, looks to sign off his Californian footballing sojourn in style.
Adam denies sectarian charge
The brother of Liverpool's Charlie Adam has pleaded not guilty to an alleged sectarian breach of the peace. Grant Adam, the 20-year-old Rangers goalkeeper, is alleged to have conducted himself in a disorderly manner by swearing and singing sectarian slogans in a Glasgow street in the early hours of Sunday. Adam denied the charge at Glasgow Sheriff Court yesterday and was released on bail until February.
Russian players' fury at tunnel attack
Russian Premier League players have appealed to the country's football association to take action against Chechen club Terek Grozny after a visiting striker was badly beaten in the tunnel by "men in uniform" last Friday. FC Krasnodar's Spartak Gogniyev suffered broken ribs, a broken nose, bruising and concussion in the incident.
