Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne has been charged with drink-driving, sources said today.

The former Newcastle and Tottenham midfielder was arrested last month after an incident at a takeaway in Leeming Bar, North Yorkshire.

The 42-year-old will appear at Northallerton Magistrates' Court on April 16.

Gascoigne was also charged with driving without insurance and driving without a licence when he answered bail at Northallerton police station yesterday.

A 40-year-old man was charged with drink-driving, being in charge of a motor vehicle while over the limit, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance in connection with the same incident.

He will also appear at Northallerton Magistrates' Court on April 16.

Both men were arrested on suspicion of being drunk in charge of a motor vehicle after police were called to Leeming Bar at 9.10pm on February 7.

They were later released on bail pending further inquiries.

Today, a North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "The two men answered bail at Northallerton police station yesterday and were charged with a number offences.

"The 42-year-old man was charged with drink-driving, driving without insurance and driving without a licence.

"The 40-year-old man was charged with drink-driving, being in charge of a motor vehicle whilst over the limit, driving whilst disqualified and driving without insurance."
