"Secret talks" regarding an £8m Liverpool move for Dwight Yorke, revealed in a Mail on Sunday "exclusive" were not secret enough, apparently, to be kept from the Sunday Express and the News of the World, though Liverpool denied all knowledge yesterday. Robbie Fowler's departure from Anfield as a consequence is predicted by the Mail and the Express. The Sunday People, meanwhile, suggests Blackburn will make a £10m move for Fowler once a Serie A buyer is found for the Italian Corrado Grabbi.
The Sunday Mirror links Tottenham with a potential Fowler bid but thinks Glenn Hoddle will need to offload Sergei Rebrov before he can go ahead, although another snippet suggests Borussia Dortmund are looking at Steffen Iversen. The People says Tottenham are interested in Aston Villa defender Gareth Barry, although not at the £10m fee Villa supposedly want.
Although the Mirror reports Internazionale's Clarence Seedorf as saying Arsenal want to sign him, the People says Arsenal are favourites to land Australian Brett Emerton from Feyenoord for £15m, a valuation it says has forced Newcastle to look at the Norwegian Tobias Linderoth, valued at £2m by Stabaek. The Mirror names Lokomotiv Moscow's forward Marat Izmailov as another Newcastle target.
The paper also claims an exclusive on a report that Newcastle are lining up a deal for Terry Venables to form a managerial duo with Alan Shearer, amid forecasts that Bobby Robson will retire next summer. The Mirror suggests that Birmingham could offer Villa's Paul Merson a player-manager's role.
The News of the World says Cardiff have sounded out Joe Royle about a possible role alongside Alan Cork.
The Express says West Ham think Ipswich wing-back Jamie Clapham is worth a £1.5m bid but that the Suffolk side want £2m. The Mirror names Hammers striker Paul Kitson as a £2.5m target for former club Derby, while the News of the World says Portsmouth are close to completing a £500,000 deal for West Ham's Svetoslav Todorov. The People says Norwich are keen to sign Paul Dickov from Manchester City, who are said by the News of the World to be poised for a £1.5m bid for Hapoel Tel Aviv striker Milan Osterc.
Lazio's Dejan Stankovic is a possible target for Chelsea, says the Mail. The Mirror links them with the Roma striker Gabriel Batistuta and Inter midfielder Luigi di Biagio.
