Former Liverpool striker El-Hadji Diouf reignites feud with Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher

The 34-year-old also took aim at former Celtic manager Neil Lennon, who he clashed with in 2011 while playing for Rangers

El Hadji Diouf has spoken out against former Liverpool teammates Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard in a fiery interview with a French football magazine.

When asked by publication So Foot who he’d least like to spend Christmas with, the former Senegal international responded with Carragher’s name, dismissing him as "the biggest turkey on the field”.

When the interview, which was conducted in French, later moves on to the subject of Gerrard, Diouf’s comments were equally as barbed.

“A great club player and an egotist,” he said. “He did not care that Liverpool win, all that mattered was that brand.”

The 34-year-old, who was hyped on his arrival to Anfield in 2002, scored only six goals in 79 appearances for the club and was criticised by both Carragher and Gerrard in their respective autobiographies.

In his most recent book, the latter described Diouf as the “at the top of the list of Liverpool signings I liked least” and criticised his “contemptuous and spiteful demeanour.”

Diouf responded by controversially accusing Gerrard of racism and jealousy, while he has also dismissed Carragher as ‘nothing’ in the past.

The former forward, who also played for Bolton Wanderers, Sunderland, Blackburn Rovers, Rangers, Doncaster Rovers and Leeds United during a 12-year stint in British football, also took aim at former Celtic manager Neil Lennon.

The pair clashed while representing opposing sides in a 2011 Old Firm derby, but first encountered one another during a 2003 UEFA Cup tie between Celtic and Liverpool during which Diouf infamously spat at a supporter.

“I didn’t know Neil Lennon but saw his face and have always hated him,” he said. “He was at Celtic and I was at Rangers and the two clubs were at war with each other.

“At the end of the Liverpool-Celtic game in the UEFA Cup he asked me for my shirt but I never gave it to him.”

Diouf currently plays for Sabah, which competes in the Malaysian Premier League.
