Liverpool v Manchester United: The greatest north-west derby encounters

Liverpool travel to Old Trafford in the unusual position of being favourites

This Sunday is a day for derbies and things kick off with Liverpool's visit to Old Trafford to take on their old rivals Manchester United.

Liverpool have not won at the ground since their 4-1 demolition of United in 2009, but given the respective performances of both sides this season, they must go into the match as strong favourites.

Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge have been the Premier League's most lethal strikeforce this campaign and against a struggling United midfield and defence, many predict they could run riot.

Things continue to go from bad to worse for David Moyes, seemingly out of the race for Champions League qualification and two goals down to Olympiakos in the tournament itself, a derby defeat would add insult to the repeat injuries of this season.

Can they reclaim some pride and upset the form book in the process, or will Liverpool gain the upper hand as their own title challenge still rumbles on?

As the memorable encounters in the gallery above show, this fixture will always have the potential to be a classic.
