The so-called 'Wally with the brolly' succeeded Sven-Goran Eriksson after the FA failed in a very public bid to recruit Brazilian World Cup winning coach Luis Felipe Scolari. Having so clearly not been the FA's first choice, both fans and the press had it in for him from the start which probably contributed to England's failure to qualify for Euro 2008. Following the 3-2 home defeat to Croatia, McLaren was sacked, just 16 months after taking the job, making it the shortest ever tenure for an England manager.
