Nottingham Forest 2 Yeovil Town 5 (Yeovil win 5-4 on agg): Yeovil break Forest hearts in thriller

By Mike Rowbottom

Yeovil Town, two goals adrift in the second leg of their League One play-off semi-final with just seven minutes of normal time remaining, produced a stupendous comeback which earned them a Wembley appearance a week tomorrow against the winners of today's tie between Blackpool and Oldham.

After forcing the tie into extra time against a Forest side reduced to 10 men following substitute Dave Prutton's sending off in the 90th minute, they finally settled matters in the 109th minute as Welsh international Arron Davies collected his second goal of the night. Lee Morris appeared to have done the trick for Yeovil two minutes into extra time with a breakaway goal following a backpass from substitute Wes Morgan, but within a minute Gary Holt had volleyed his team level on aggregate at 4-4 and Forest looked like making the penalty shoot-out before Davies did for them.

The fans from Yeovil - who only came up from the Conference four years ago - were rendered mad with joy, and the victorious players left the pitch to a hugely sporting ovation from the home supporters that was acknowledged in kind. The victory condemned the double European Cup winners to a third season at least in the third tier.

Having won the away leg 2-0, Forest looked ideally placed. But as their former manager Brian Clough once famously remarked, "it only takes a second to score a goal". The adage was recalled afterwards by Yeovil manager Russell Slade, a Nottingham man who used his local knowledge to relax his men with an evening's 10-pin bowling on Thursday. The collective strike came the following night. "This has got to be the greatest comeback of my career," said Slade.

Davies had created early doubts within Forest with a goal after 22 minutes, but when Scott Dobie headed home in the 47th minute, it seemed the home team were back in charge. However, an 83rd-minute own goal from Alan Wright sent a shockwave through the City Ground, and five minutes later there was silence as Marcus Stewart made it 3-3 overall. The unthinkable was happening.
