Player analysis: Who is Saido Berahino - the West Brom forward who scored the winner against Manchester United?

West Brom are eager to tie down forward Saido Berahino to a new long-term contract following his goals last week against Arsenal and Manchester United, with the Premier League’s top clubs keeping an eye on the 20-year-old.

Having scored a beautiful winning goal at Old Trafford to hand the Baggies their first victory at the Theatre of Dreams since 1978, both The Gunners and Everton have been alerted to the England Under-21’s star’s budding potential, and the worrying fact for Steve Clarke is that he could leave the club for as little as £300,000 in compensation.

Under his current contract, Albion could extend his deal under similar terms until the summer of 2015, but they are believed to be prepared to offer Berahino and significant increase in order to keep him at the Hawthorns for the foreseeable future.

Everton’s chief-scout Kevin Reeves will be at the Hawthorns on the weekend when Arsenal visit for the second time in under a fortnight, which will also give Arsene Wenger another chance to see Berahino in action.

Having fled war-torn Burundi at the age of 10, he joined the Baggies centre of excellence in 2004, having qualified for the England national side through residency grounds.

He has since spent time on loan with Northampton Town, Brentford and Peterborough United where he scored a total of 12 goals in 33 games, while he has scored an impressive four goals in the Baggies Capital One this season Cup – including a notable hat-trick against Newport County on his first start for the club – along with his first in the Premier League on Saturday.

He has featured throughout the England youth ranks, culminating in his call-up to the Under-21’s in August for the friendly against Scotland, although he didn’t feature in the match at Bramall Lane.

He made his debut though in the 1-0 win over Moldova earlier this month, scoring the winning goal, while he also netted in his second appearance when Gareth Southgate’s side drew 11 with Finland.

And despite his rapid rise to scoring the a winner at Old Trafford, it has been revealed that his contract earns him a hugely modest £850-a-week, with less than a year left to run on it. To put that into comparison, it would take Berahino over five-and-a-half years to earn what his opposite number on Saturday Wayne Rooney earns in a week, although he looks set for an imminent wage hike after his tremendous start to the season.
