According to the Mail on Sunday, Sir Alex Ferguson has identified Wayne Rooney as his main summer transfer target if he is unable to halt the £40m exit of Ruud van Nistelrooy to Real Madrid and knows Manchester United will fork out the £25mto persuade Everton to let him go.

The Sunday Express says he is planning a £30m double swoop for Rooney and Alan Smith if Van Nistelrooy goes. Smith will be a target for both United and Liverpool, the News of the World predicts. However, the People reckons Ferguson has 25-year-old Marseille striker Didier Drogba in his sights in a £14m deal. The Sunday Mirror says United had a £15m bid for 18-year-old Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres rejected.

The News of the World speculates that Jose Mourinho may team up with Louis van Gaal in a managerial super team at Stamford Bridge, with Gianfranco Zola on the coaching staff. Zola, the paper suggests, could be invited back in a bid to appease supporters when Claudio Ranieri is shown the door.

Meanwhile, the paper claims Juventus have told Chelsea they can have David Trezeguet if Frank Lampard moves in the opposite direction. Chelsea have still to offer Lampard a new contract, though the Sunday Mirror believes they are ready to meet his demands. The Mail on Sunday says Lampard wants £80,000-a-week, the same as Juan Sebastian Veron and Hernan Crespo. However, the Mail says the pair could be on their way out, along with Joe Cole, should Mourinho take charge. The paper reckons Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Jesper Gonkjaer, Claude Makalele, Marcel Desailly, Geremi, Mario Melchiot, Mario Stanic and even Adrian Mutu are all vulnerable.

Michael Duberry is likely to be among the exodus from Leeds, according to the News of the World, with Wolves ready to sign him on a free transfer as Leeds cannot afford his £25,000-a-week wages. And, the paper says, Fulham want to sign Leeds skipper Dominic Matteo in a £1.75m deal and Southampton are prepared to pay £3m for England under-21 attacker James Milner. The People says Leeds are ready to talk to coach Kevin Blackwell about taking over as manager and reckons Blackburn are keen to offer Dwight Yorke to Wolves in a swap for striker Henri Camara.

The News of the World reckons Blackburn are lining up Everton striker Tomasz Radzinski, and says Portsmouth striker Svetoslav Todorov is a target for Norwich, also said to be keen on Birmingham midfielder Bryan Hughes. The People reckons Peter Crouch will lead Norwich's Premiership campaign after a £1.5m move from Aston Villa. The Mirror says Joe Kinnear wants to take Arsenal's David Bentley on loan to Nottingham Forest.

While the News of the World reckons Brian Horton is favourite to take over from Steve McMahon at Blackpool and links McMahon, along with Colin Lee and Brian Flynn, with the Burnley job, the Express claims former Aston Villa and Derby manager John Gregory could be set for a shock return to Queen's Park Rangers if a proposed takeover goes through. The People believes Rotherham manager Ronnie Moore will be sounded out by Burnley.
