Relegation: Too good to go down?

West Ham were relegated from the Premier League on the last day of the season in 2003 despite a wealth of talent. Throughout the season it seemed impossible that a side that included Paulo Di Canio, Les Ferdinand, Freddie Kanoute, Jermain Defoe and Joe Cole could actually go down. Not even Trevor Brooking, who was drafted in to save their season, could, well, save their season...
Newcastle's star-studded side will be fighting for their Premier League status this Sunday - but as history proves - no team is too good to go down.
For much of the season pundits have suggested that there is too much quality in the side for them to be relegated, and with the likes of Michael Owen, Mark Viduka, Obafemi Martins, Jonas Gutierrez and Damien Duff lining up in the black and white, you can see their point.

The same could almost be said of Sunderland who could also be relegated this weekend. The Black Cats have spent big and boast stars such as Craig Gordon, Kenwyne Jones and Anton Ferdinand in their side.
But as this guide illustrates, the reality of relegation does not care about illustrious histories or star-studded teams - all that matters is which sides are in the bottom three come the final whistle on the last day of the season.
