Round-up: Adebayor sees off the Henry blues

By Mark Burton

Arsenal had a gentle introduction to life after Thierry Henry yesterday, when they went to Barnet for a friendly and won 2-0. Emmanuel Adebayor and Nacer Barazite, a promising young Dutch midfielder, scored the goals and Arsène Wenger is confident that his side will cope in the new era.

"I think there are some players who will take on more responsibility - like Robin Van Persie, like Adebayor, like Theo Walcott," the Arsenal manager said.

Liverpool cruised to a 3-0 victory at Crewe with their new Ukrainian striker Andriy Voronin impressing for 45 minutes without scoring. In the absence of their other expensive signings, Peter Crouch, Lee Peltier and Ray Putterill each scored.

In South Korea, Bolton beat Mexico's Chivas Guadalajara 2-0 in the Peace Cup thanks to goals from Zoltan Harsanyi and Kevin Nolan but they were unhappy that their 19-year-old goalkeeper Przemyslaw Kazimierczak was not allowed to play after his 12-hour trip to replace Ian Walker, who is struggling with a back injury.

While Manchester City started Sven Goran Eriksson's tenure yesterday with a victory, their former manager Stuart Pearce is preparing to become manager of the England Under-21 team. His full-time role should be confirmed this week. Although England won only one of their four matches at the recent European Championships in Holland, Pearce impressed senior Football Association figures.

The Under-21s play a friendly against Romania at Bristol City on 21 August before starting their next qualifying campaign in September.
