Foster's omission from the England squad this week has been blamed on injury, but one can't help wonder if he would warrant a place in the squad even if he was fit.

Given his chance this season, Foster's performances have been met with much criticism and with van der Sar on the verge of returning to action, the 26-year-old may have missed the boat.

Foster is only young and has time to redeem himself, but as this controversial guide suggests, he wouldn't be the first sportsman to fail to reach his potential.
