Styles admits mistake over Ronaldo penalty
The Referee Rob Styles has apologised to Bolton for mistakenly awarding a penalty to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday. It is understood the match official has contacted the club privately to express regret at giving a spot-kick to United when defender Jlloyd Samuel fairly tackled Cristiano Ronaldo.
It is not the first time Styles has apologised for a mistake – last season he did so publicly to Liverpool for a penalty error when Steve Finnan challenged Florent Malouda. United went on to win Saturday's match 2-0 and even their manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, was surprised about the award. The Bolton manager, Gary Megson, said after the match that he would not welcome a call from Styles. Megson said: "I don't want him to ring me up. I would have more respect from him if he just holds his hands up and says he was wrong."
The Everton manager, David Moyes, has admitted a Football Association charge of improper conduct, relating to his reaction to a decision made by the referee Alan Wiley during the Toffees' Premier League match against Stoke on 14 September. Moyes has requested a personal hearing, but no date has been set yet. The Scot was angered by Wiley's decision not to award a penalty for what he felt was a handball by the Stoke defender Leon Cort.
Everton have also lodged an appeal with the FA over the midfielder Tim Cahill's red card against Liverpool on Saturday. Cahill was dismissed in the 80th minute of the 2-0 Merseyside derby defeat for his tackle on Xabi Alonso.
