The world of sport and Twitter became entwined like never before during 2014.

Every moment of the World Cup seemed to be dissected and discussed on the social media platform so unsurprisingly the tournament in Brazil was the most tweeted about event of the last 12 months.

But what about after that?

This was a year in which Russia had an opportunity to express themselves on the world stage with the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Whilst it was an incredibly successful games for Team GB, it will also be remembered for the moment the opening ceremony went wrong and how the Russians made a joke of it during the closing ceremony.

Andy Murray carried the hopes of a nation (as per usual) when he looked to defend his Wimbledon crown, whilst we also had the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. An alternative opening ceremony ensured the nation were talking about it once it got under way.

As a nation that loves its sport, other events feature in the countdown of the top 10 trends of 2014 on Twitter. Click through the guide to see where they placed.
