This week, the headlines have been dominated by the release of autobiographies from Roy Keane and Kevin Pietersen, two of the modern age’s most controversial sporting superstars.

Neither has pulled any punches in their widely publicised memoirs, taking the opportunity to settle scores, ruffle feathers and stick the knife into those perceived to have wronged them during their incident-packed careers. Both soared up the bestsellers charts after their release on Thursday.

But they are by no means the first sporting autobiographies to cause a stir. For generations, sportspeople have used their books, often through the conduit of a ghost-writer, to confess sins, besmirch longstanding rivals, or simply revel in tales of debauchery that took place beyond the prying eyes of the public.
