All too often the pressure of the January transfer window leads to panic buys and inflated prices but in amongst the random purchases of carthorse strikers, maverick midfielders and accident-prone defenders signed in hope rather than expectation, there have been some astute buys.
It remains to be seen which category Loic Remy and Christopher Samba will end up in, but these are the best of the cup-landing, relegation-avoiding transfers of the January window.
