McDermott became the fourth Premier League manager to be axed during the season when the Reading owner Anton Zingarevich deemed 'a change was neccessary'. McDermott had led the Royals to promotion from the Championship last season having taken over on a caretaker basis in 2009. He was given the job permanently a year later. He leaves Reading 19th in the Premier League - four points from safety.
