Adam Johnson, who is awaiting trial for child sex and grooming charges, is likely to face disciplinary action from the Football Association for his goal celebration in the Tyne-Wear derby.

The Sunderland winger scored the opening goal of the match against Newcastle when he converted a controversially awarded penalty.

After dispatching the ball from the spot past Rob Elliot, Johnson ran the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the away fans at the Stadium of Light.

It's understood that some Newcastle fans had been singing derogatory songs about Johnson, relating to the charges, prior to the goal.

Johnson is awaiting trial accused of three counts of sexual activity with a child aged 15, which allegedly took place in January. He also faces one charge of sexual grooming between December and February. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges and is expected to face trial in February next year.

Sunderland initially suspended Johnson after the allegations were made, but reinistated him into the side.

Johnson slid down on his knees after reaching the Newcastle fans in scenes similar to when Emmanual Adebayor, playing for Manchester City, celebrated in front of fans of his former club Arsenal.

Adebayor was punished with a £25,000 fine and a two-match ban, however the suspension was suspended due to a "public apology and the extremely provocative nature of the abuse he received".
