Sunderland’s decision to sack Paolo Di Canio less than six months after handing him a two-and-a-half year deal back in March will not have come as a surprise to many – the club are now looking for their sixth permanent manager in five years.

The Black Cats currently sit at the foot of the Premier League table with just one point from their opening five games. And the reported lack of harmony within the squad, caused by the Italian’s hardline management style, has impacted the team’s performance to the extent that Sunderland felt they had to make a change.

Di Canio becomes the first managerial casualty in the top flight this season, and the latest in a long line of managers who have come and gone at the Stadium of Light. He leaves the club with just three Premier League victories to his name, perhaps the most impressive a 3-0 away victory at Newcastle. Today, we take a look back at Sunderland’s last five managers, examining their respective reigns and what ultimately caused them to leave the club.
