Andre Villas-Boas spells out Tottenham targets following victory over Manchester United

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas dismissed any talk of his side being title challengers after they secured their first away win over Manchester United in 23 years with a thrilling 3-2 Barclays Premier League triumph at Old Trafford.

Jan Vertonghen and Gareth Bale gave the visitors a deserved half-time lead.

Not for the first time at Old Trafford in recent years, Spurs were hit by a fierce second-half fightback.

However, amid a flurry of goals, Clint Dempsey scored in between efforts from Nani and Shinji Kagawa. And, after Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick had struck the frame of Brad Friedel's goal, Andre Villas-Boas' side clung on for the final whistle.

Villas-Boas said: "This is a very special night for us but our quest is to qualify for the Champions League.

"It is very difficult to go for the title. We understand it is a place where the great teams of this country belong.

"We want to win a trophy this season - and we want Champions League qualification."

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said his side only had themselves to blame as they slipped to their first defeat of the season, 2-1 at home to Chelsea.

Blues captain John Terry came through a hostile reception at the Emirates Stadium as Roberto Di Matteo's side consolidated their lead at the top of the table.

Fernando Torres fired the visitors ahead following some poor marking by Laurent Koscielny and Juan Mata's free-kick squirmed in to secure three points for the European champions after Gervinho had equalised on the stroke of half-time.

"They had three shots on target and scored two goals, from soft set-pieces," Wenger said.

"Defensively we were just not at the level you have to be in a game like that, which is where we were punished today.

"For the rest, we have shown quality and spirit, but we have to show more personality and authority on the goals we conceded."

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers hailed Luis Suarez after he netted a Carrow Road hat-trick for the second straight season in Liverpool's 5-2 success against Norwich.

"His goals here were incredible last year and this was another masterclass in finishing apart from the one on one chance," Rodgers said after his first league win as Liverpool manager.

"It was a special day for him and the team."

Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko came off the bench to hit a late winner as the champions came from behind to win 2-1 at Fulham.

Nikica Jelavic notched twice as Everton wrapped up a 3-1 win over Southampton before half-time.

Reading's clash with Newcastle burst into life after the break after a goalless first 45 minutes, Demba Ba maintaining his impressive start to the campaign with two more goals in a 2-2 draw.

Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher continued his fine scoring run since his summer move from Wolves with the winner as the Black Cats toppled 10-man Wigan 1-0 at the Stadium of Light.

Stoke's Peter Crouch bagged a double to give his team a 2-0 triumph against Swansea at the Britannia Stadium.
