Andy Carroll has posted a pre-surgery selfie from his hospital bed after the West Ham striker underwent an operation on yet another ankle injury that threatens to keep him on the sidelines for four months.

West Ham confirmed on Thursday that Carroll had suffered an ankle injury on the club’s pre-season tour of New Zealand, and looks set to be ruled out until December at the earliest. The blow comes after he missed the entire first half of last season with a similar injury, and he only made 16 appearances in what turned out to be an injury-hit season.

Carroll’s late performances had put him in the frame for a surprise England recall ahead of the World Cup, but it was not to be as Roy Hodgson chose to take Rickie Lambert to Brazil to make up his attack.

Posting the picture on his Instagram account, Carroll captioned the selfie “Going in!!! #Lovingthedress”, but his facial expression painted a picture of sadness and disappointment.

The picture comes after Carroll posted a video on his Twitter account showing off his ball skills while on tour in New Zealand.

Carroll still has five years to run on his contract after joining the Hammers for an estimated £17m last summer following a successful loan spell.

Injury and suspension have played their part in limiting his appearances for the East London club since completing the move from Liverpool, and fans will hope he can return to fitness as soon as possible with another relegation dog-fight expected to be on the horizon this season.
