Anthony Martial: Manchester United great Gary Neville says 'he never expected Martial to be this good' after impressive start after £36m move

Gary Neville has admitted that he has been left surprised by Anthony Martial's flying start at Manchester United.

The 19-year-old Martial, who joined the club for a £36m deal from Monaco, has now scored three goals in two Premier League appearances for United after his impressive double against Southampton in the 3-2 win today.

Speaking on Sky Sports, the former United right-back Neville said: "Could he step up from being a 15 [goals] in 70 [appearances] man to a one in two man? Can he get to that level? Difficult. I never thought he'd even be close to that but he's shown in the first couple of weeks he's got the composure to score goals."

Neville added: "[It's been] some start. To say 'some player' I think is a little bit early.

"I wouldn't have imagined that he would have had the composure that he's had because his goal-scoring record before he came to Manchester United was 15 goals in 70 games, which doesn't suggest he's got that level of composure.

All at sea early on in a throw back to the dark days. Struggled to cope with Pelle's power and the fluid nature of the remainder of Southampton's attack. A dip after what has been a stellar start to the campaign.

Although the Dutchman is composed on the ball his lack of pace is strikingly obvious. His ability can get him our of trouble at times but his snail-like speed can be his downfall at centre back.

Distinctly average. The skipper was deployed at number 10 and covered plenty of ground but did not provide the cutting edge in the final third that he is constantly expected to command.

It just isn't happening for the Dutchman. He is desperate to make something happen but his powerful runs and ability on the ball are yet to yield a final product. Struck the post in the build up to Mata's goal.

The teenager has answered his critics emphatically. A well-taken brace courtesy of two composed finishes had the appearance of a man with far more experience than the 19-year-old. His instant impact goes from strength to strength.

"There's huge pressure on him, he'll be aware of that - the expectation, the price tag.

"To be redundant in the game for 30 minutes and then show that composure and class at that moment says a lot about him.

"He's made a big impression on all of us."
