Arsenal news: Jamie Carragher warns Gunners could wait another 10 years if they don't win Premier League title

Former Liverpool defender Carragher believes Arsenal must convert their chance to win the title this season before their rivals respond in 2016/17

Jamie Carragher has delivered a stern warning to Arsenal that they must seize their chance and win the Premier League title this season, or else face the prospect of going another 10 years without it.

Arsenal top the table heading into 2016 after their victory over Bournemouth on Monday saw them leapfrog Leicester into first place, with the Foxes 1-1 draw with Manchester City a day later ensuring the Gunners will lead the way in the new year.

Arsene Wenger has already tried to play down the position, stating that leading on New Year’s Day does not guarantee any success, but Carragher has warned them that another failure to win a first title since 2004 could see the club’s agonising wait stretch another decade.

Speaking on Sky Sports as part of their coverage for Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Sunderland, Carragher said: “If Arsenal don't win it this year, I think it could be another 10 years before they win it again,.

“Chelsea won't accept the situation they're in, they'll throw a lot of money at it in the summer, they'll get another manager. I think Man City may do the same even if they win it.

“I think Manchester United, talking about Louis van Gaal, looking at the squad – is it good enough? So those three teams, they've all faltered.

What to expect from Arsenal this transfer window

“This is Arsenal's big chance, they have to take it. Whether that means spending again in January... but this is an opportunity they can't let slip.”

Arsenal begin 2016 with the visit of Newcastle to the Emirates Stadium, and with the team still fighting on three fronts with matches to come in the FA Cup and the Champions League, it looks set to be a busy season for the Gunners in their bid to end 12 years without the title.
