Arsene Wenger didn't want to sign him last summer.

As if there wasn't enough evidence to show that the Arsenal manager made a huge mistake in turning down Cesc Fabregas when he had the first option to buy him back from Barcelona, the Chelsea midfielder has now been named the best midfielder in Europe.

On his way to helping Chelsea win the League Cup and their first Premeir League title since 2010, Fabregas was brilliant, recording 18 assists and scoring three important goals along the way.

Swiss football think tank the CIES Football Observatory has now named Fabregas as statistically the best defensive midfielder in Europe, the 28-year-old scoring a perfect 100.

The score is based on six key performance indicators - rigour, recovery, distribution, take on, chance creation and shooting - and covers Europe's top five leagues.

The best scoring Arsenal player is Aaron Ramsey who scored 74.2, or No 14 on the list, below Nemanja Matic in 12th with 75.9.

Santi Cazorla is No 10 on the list of attacking midfielders, with 64.3, but Chelsea rival Eden Hazard scores 93.8, behind only James Rodriguez of Real Madrid.

Alexis Sanchez is on the list of forward, with 58.3, also behind a Chelsea player, Diego Costa who scored 65.

Somehow, Liverpool transfer flop Dejan Lovren is the only Premier League defender in the top 15, scoring 79.6.
