Arsenal's late £3m swoop for Denilson

By John Nisbet

The Brazilian club Sao Paulo said last night that they had reached a deal to transfer the 18-year-old midfielder Denilson to Arsenal, who will pay £3.4m. The deal was finalised before the transfer deadline on Thursday, Sao Paulo said. Denilson has mainly been a squad player and has been used sparingly this season.

Chelsea confirmed yesterday that the Germany defender Robert Huth had completed his protracted £6m move to Middlesbrough before the deadline.

The 22-year-old's move was put in doubt because of the saga surrounding the England left-back Ashley Cole's switch to Stamford Bridge from Arsenal and William Gallas' move in the other direction. Because the Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon was heavily involved in the Cole negotiations he was not available to put his signature on the documents that sealed Huth's departure.

Olivier Bernard made a last-minute decision to turn his back on Leeds United - he had agreed terms with the Yorkshire club - to rejoin Newcastle United. The French defender, 26, had his contract at Rangers cancelled and, as a free agent, signed for the Magpies.

The Charlton goalkeeper Stephan Andersen's loan move to Leeds collapsed due to a "disagreement over a recall clause".
