Brendan Rodgers' position as Liverpool manager had looked likely to be strengthened by Jurgen Klopp's decision to take a break from management, however the odds on him being sacked have drastically shortened.

Former Borussia Dortmund manager Klopp has been leading the way in betting markets to replace Rodgers should Anfield bosses choose to make a change. Reports last month even suggested the German had told friends that he was interested in joining Liverpool.

However, today he announced he would be taking a break from the game.

"After seven intense and emotional years, I think it's a good idea to let the numerous memories settle in before I take on a new challenge with my coaching team, refreshed and fully motivated," he said in a statement.

"I'm going to take a break until further notice."

The announcement immediately saw the odds of Klopp becoming the next Liverpool manager drift whilst the same could have been expected on the odds of Rodgers being sacked.

However, a surge of bets on the current Liverpool manager being sacked earlier today saw his odds slashed from 11/8 to 5/6 to go by one bookmaker.

“At the start of this season, Rodgers was 100/1 to leave Liverpool but it’s gone from the unthinkable to the very likely as he is now odds-on at 5/6 to part ways with the club he came so close to winning the title with, this time last year,” a spokesperson from Betfair said.

With Klopp seemingly out of the running, the favourites to replace Rodgers at Anfield are former Real Madrid and Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti and Ajax boss Frank de Boer.
