Campbell confident of major role for Arsenal

Former England international Sol Campbell insists he can play a major part in helping Arsenal to land the Barclays Premier League title this season.

Campbell, 35, who is set to rejoin the Gunners until the end of the season, also wishes he had never left the club in 2006.

Arsene Wenger's team have cut the gap to leaders Chelsea from 11 points to three inside six weeks.

Even Chelsea captain John Terry admitted that he considered Arsenal out of the title race after the Blues beat them 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium in November.

Many feel the Gunners' relative inexperience could count against them in a hard-fought title race but Campbell insists he would be able to help address that shortcoming.

The defender was a key part of both the double-winning side of 2002 and the 'Invincibles' who went through an entire season undefeated two years later.

"The likes of me and William [Gallas] have seen it all before, and Cesc [Fabregas] too, that's what it's all about really," Campbell told the club's official website, www.arsenal.com.

"It's not so much dragging them over the line but just showing when you've got that green light to keep them going.

"They are fantastic guys and great players. But as the games come thick and fast and you've got to get a win here or a draw, and it's the fifth game [in a couple of weeks] and everyone is tired, getting the lads over the line and getting that result is what's important.

"Those points add up at the end of the season."

While Campbell is optimistic over Arsenal's title hopes, he admits he should have stayed at the club instead of quitting in May 2006.

The centre-back ended his first spell with the Gunners by scoring in the UEFA Champions League Final in 2006.

"Yes [I wish I had never left]," he admitted.

"Sometimes when you go away you realise what a top club Arsenal is. Slowly but surely everyone moves on, but sometimes you move away and you re-think things.

"Things happen for whatever reason and here I am. You have to apply yourself and I have worked so hard to get to this situation.

"The physios, fitness staff, everyone at Arsenal have worked wonders with me, and it feels like coming home really.

"I think Arsene Wenger is now looking at a little bit of experience to push the lads through. But the main thing is if everything goes well, every time I play and get the chance, I want to show what I can do."
