Cesc Fabregas is alleged to have caused the touchline row that saw Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham descend into chaos after the final whistle, with manager Guus Hiddink being knocked down stairs and into the dugout during a heated confrontation between the two sets of players and staff.

Spurs already face receiving a £25,000 fine for having nine players booked, a record in the Premier League, while three of their players face the prospect of further action being taken against them depending on referee Mark Clattenburg’s report, which will be filed on Tuesday.

Mousa Dembele, Kyle Walker and Erik Lamela were all involved in altercations with Chelsea players that could result in retrospective action being taken once the referee’s report has been filed, with Dembele perhaps facing the most severest punishment after appearing to eye-gouge Chelsea striker Diego Costa during one of the many fracas’s that arose during and after the match.

The players and staff collided after the final whistle near the entry to the Stamford Bridge tunnel, with tensions boiling over and players shoving and pushing each other while others tried to restrain certain aggressors.

However, the Evening Standard reports that Fabregas is alleged to have started the melee by goading the Tottenham bench in both English and Spanish before flicking somebody’s shorts, leading to an aggressive response from the Spurs technical area.

A separate claim suggests that Tottenham’s Lamela started the argument, with the Argentine described as being “particularly aggressive” while others were heard to be shouting and swearing from inside the tunnel.

The result of the confrontation saw Tottenham defender Danny Rose make contact with Hiddink, sending the 69-year-old crashing to the ground as he fell into the dugout. Video footage appears to show Rose was barged in Hiddink’s direction by the mass of players arguing with each other, though thankfully Hiddink was unharmed and he got up before shaking hands with his Spurs counterpart Mauricio Pochettino.

Lamela could also face action for appearing to deliberately tread on Fabregas’s hand. The Spain international was on the floor when Lamela stood on his outstretched hand, and the Spurs forward showed no signs of trying to lift the pressure on it or apologising to the midfielder afterwards. Fabregas made a prolonged complaint to both Clattenburg and his assistant, but no action was taken on the pitch and it remains to be seen if Clattenburg mentions the incident in his report.

If not, Lamela could face retrospective action and face up to a three-match ban for violent conduct.

Walker may also face action, although his kick on Pedro did appear to be seen by Clattenburg who elected to give the Spurs right-back a stern talking to. Walker went on to trip Pedro with a rash challenge in the 27th minute that brought the first of Tottenham’s nine bookings, with Son Heung-min, Toby Alderweireld and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris the only members of the starting line-up not to see yellow.
