Charlton miscount gives Giggs chance to set appearance record in Moscow
Ryan Giggs can surpass Sir Bobby Charlton's record 759 league appearances for Manchester United in Moscow this season because statisticians have discovered that Sir Bobby missed one of the matches credited to him.
Sir Bobby missed a third round FA Cup tie against Bolton on 6 January 1962, owing to a bout of 'flu although he – rather than the flying winger Warren Bradley, who stood in for him that day – has always been credited with the appearance.
It is now down to his manager whether Giggs, who thought he would have to wait until next season for the record, secures it this month. Ferguson dwelt yesterday on Sir Bobby's accomplishment.
"Sir Bobby just played and played. Did he ever have injuries? I am not sure he did," Ferguson said. But he seems sure to give Giggs his moment in Moscow. "I am sure Ryan will be involved in the last three games," Ferguson concluded.
