Charlton sign Reid to four-year deal

The Republic of Ireland international Andy Reid has left Tottenham Hotspur for their Premiership rivals Charlton. The midfielder, the fifth new recruit for the club's new manager Iain Dowie in the past nine days, has signed a four-year deal which could be worth £3m.

Dowie said: "Everyone is aware that the Premier League is about quality and ability on the ball, so we are delighted to sign Andy. He has a great range of passing, a tremendous set-piece delivery and also possesses an eye for goal. We are also delighted to have secured his signature in the face of some stiff competition."

Reid, who has won 22 caps and scored three goals for his country, joined Spurs from Nottingham Forest in January 2005 for £4m.

The West Ham manager Alan Pardew has lifted the spirits around Upton Park with the £2m signing of the England goalkeeper Robert Green. Pardew was "devastated" on Tuesday after his key striker Dean Ashton was ruled out for three months with a broken ankle suffered while training with the England squad.

But the Hammers manager was able to raise a smile after Green passed a strict medical, ironically in the same hospital Ashton was undergoing ankle surgery, and signed a four-year contract to complete his move from Norwich.

Pardew described Ashton's £7.25m signing from the Canaries in January as a "statement of intent" for West Ham and Green's capture can be put in the same bracket. The 26-year-old is an England international but with plenty still to prove and Pardew believes the competition for top billing with the Northern Ireland international Roy Carroll will bring out the best in him.

"I'm delighted to have secured Robert's signature," Pardew said. "He already has Premiership experience and is an established member of the England squad, so it is obviously fantastic to have him here in our squad. At 26, he still has his best years ahead of him, and we are all excited about what he can bring."

Birmingham have signed the Coventry forward Gary McSheffrey for £4m. The Blues looked to have been fighting a losing battle with Coventry, whose manager Micky Adams claimed that Birmingham's repeated bids were "a waste of fax paper".

But after seeing their fifth bid accepted, Birmingham got their man yesterday when McSheffrey, 24, passed a medical and signed a four-year contract with an option to extend for a further two years.

The Everton forward James McFadden has also signed a new four-year deal. The Scotland international made a significant contribution last season after failing to make an impact following his £1.25m move from Motherwell in 2003.
