Chelsea are said to be readying an improved offer for Manchester United's Wayne Rooney after their original £30m bid was turned down.

Jose Mourinho has made the 27-year-old forward his No 1 transfer target this summer, with the Blues set to offer £40m in an attempt to prise him away from Old Trafford.

Rooney, meanwhile, is set to make his first United appearances since May - in a pre-season friendly with AIK Stockholm on Tuesday and Rio Ferdinand's testimonial on Friday.

With Robin van Persie considered David Moyes' first-choice striker at Old Trafford and questions about Rooney's relationship with his manager, the England man would reportedly relish the chance to be the main man at Stamford Bridge - a guarantee that Mourinho could offer him.

Meanwhile Moyes continues to chase Barcelona's Cesc Fabregas although is also said to be considering raiding his former club Everton for Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines.
