Chelsea head in to Tuesday’s Premier League trip to Norwich without their captain John Terry after the defender failed to recover from the hamstring injury that has kept him out of the last two-and-half weeks.

Terry suffered the hamstring strain in an awkward challenge with Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, and despite attempting to continue through the pain, the 35-year-old was forced off shortly before the break.

The former England captain has since missed Chelsea’s last three matches, and will not feature in tonight’s trip to Carrow Road in which the Blues could move to within five points of fifth-placed Manchester United, who don’t play until Wednesday night.

Terry is not the only injury concern that interim manager Guus Hiddink has to consider, as Pedro suffered a similar hamstring injury during the weekend victory over Southampton. The Spain international looks certain to miss out, but the side could be boosted by the addition of January signing Alexandre Pato for the first time since he completed his loan signing.

Diego Costa is fit to play, but Hiddink admitted that he would like to rest his No 1 striker at some point in the coming weeks, meaning that one of Loic Remy, Pato and Bertrand Traore could start in his place.

Radamel Falcao remains out of contention despite returning to training as he continues to recover from the groin injury that has kept him sidelined since October.
