Chris Ramsey appointed QPR manager: Ramsey is ready to lead Queens Park Rangers relegation fight

Queen’s Park Rangers have appointed Chris Ramsey to try to save them from Premier League relegation.

Ramsey has been in temporary charge since Harry Redknapp’s resignation last week but he will continue in the role over the club’s crucial final 13 games this season. In his one game so far – the 2-0 win over Sunderland on Tuesday night – Ramsey oversaw Rangers’ first and only away win of the season.

In the build-up to that game, Ramsey had said that he would “jump at the chance” to take the job on a more permanent basis, and he has been given until the end of the season, after his coaching has proved popular with players and staff so far. A statement from QPR chairman Tony Fernandes confirming the appointment is likely today.

Ramsey joined the QPR set-up last year, having been head of player development at Tottenham Hotspur for years. During that time, Ramsey was an assistant to Tim Sherwood during his six-month spell as Spurs head coach last season.

Both Ramsey and Sherwood had worked with Les Ferdinand, now QPR’s director of football, at Spurs. Sherwood had been in talks with QPR this week over the managerial role but withdrew on Tuesday having not received assurances over the club’s future. Rangers, who are looking for a head coach to work alongside Ferdinand, had also been linked with Michael Laudrup and Real Madrid assistant Neil Clement. It remains to be seen who they will approach in the summer, whichever league they are in.

Fernandes had claimed on Twitter on Tuesday that he had found his “dream manager”, although he said that the appointment could “take a while”.

Despite Tuesday’s win, Rangers are still just one place clear of the relegation zone, ahead of Aston Villa only on goal difference.

Ramsey’s next game in charge is another relegation six-pointer, away at Hull City a week tomorrow. QPR are currently one place and one point behind Hull.

Rangers captain Joey Barton was pleased with Ramsey’s appointment. “Good news on Chris Ramsey,” he tweeted. “Very good since he has come in. Got group back on track. Lots for us all to do now to keep club in the league.” Ramsey will have to make do without Dutch midfielder Leroy Fer for at least two months after he injured knee ligaments on Tuesday.
