Danny Ings, whilst a useful signing, is not the quality of player that Liverpool need if they are to fight at the top of the table.

That's the view of two former players following yesterday's announcement that the Burnley striker has agreed a move to Anfield.

Compensation must be agreed between the Burnley and Liverpool before Ings can officially switch - a situation complicated by a £12m bid from Tottenham. However, Ings is fully expected to line-up for the Reds next season.

John Aldridge told BBC Radio 5 Live that the move was a good one - but not enough.

"It's a no-brainer. He looks a threat and the lad's got great potential," said the former Liverpool striker.

But he added: "We need a really big marquee signing."

Former midfielder Danny Murphy agreed.

“Danny Ings is talented and he can score goals,” Murphy said of Ings, who found the net 11 times in the Premier League last season. “It’s tough to judge him on this season because he’s been playing for Burnley. He’s a talent, but he is unproven at the top level.

"He’s a great prospect and he’s English, so that’s good news for Liverpool. At this stage though, to get back into the top four, do they need a proven out and out striker? A bigger, more established, name? Or are they going to rely on Daniel Sturridge being fit? Because I’m not sure they can.”
