Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has admitted that he does not know whether David De Gea will stay at the club this summer, amid interest from Real Madrid.

De Gea has travelled on United's pre-season tour of America, but has been strongly linked with a move back to Spain to play for Real.

Van Gaal says, however, that De Gea is doing his "utmost best" in training and still performing in a professional manner for the club. The Dutchman also refused to confirm United's approach for Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero, who spent last season on loan at Monaco from Sampdoria.

"When you ask me about the attitude of De Gea I think the question is stupid," he told reporters in the US. "I cannot answer if Manchester United will sign Romero because it is a process. I can't say anything about the process and the strategy of Manchester United.

"I've said that two or three press conferences and you are asking every time the same questions. Maybe you are right, or maybe not, it depends on David de Gea.

"Shall he stay? I don't know! Maybe you? Maybe you have spoken with David? He's training here and doing his utmost best."
