Mesut Ozil apologised to David Luiz after Germany annihilated Brazil 7-1 in the 2014 World Cup semi-final, causing one of the biggest footballing nations in the world to go into mass mourning.

Nothing less than winning the tournament would have sufficed for Brazil but Ozil’s Germany quickly put an end to that dream and went on to cause one of the biggest embarrassments in football history.

The Arsenal midfielder was about one of the only German players not to get on the scoresheet that evening as Die Mannschaft raced into a 4-0 lead within the first 30 minutes.

Luiz, however, was on the opposing end of the semi-final walloping and Ozil revealed that he comforted the Chelsea centre back after the game such was the overwhelming sadness around the stadium.

“All the players, me as well, were a little bit surprised,” Ozil told Arsenal’s official YouTube channel.

“After 20 mins it’s 4-0 and you’re like ‘What’s happened here?’.

“If you lose a big game and you see all the fans outside crying and the players crying, you feel with them. So I went to David Luiz and said ‘I really apologise, you have a nice country and nice people’.”

The pair were reunited in the Premier League this season but Ozil was the architect of Luiz's downfall once again as Arsenal convincingly defeated Chelsea 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium.

However, Luiz might have the last laugh this season after Chelsea jumped above Arsenal in the Premier League table following their 5-0 thrashing over Everton on Saturday.
