Eriksson set to spend another £20m on his City revolution

By Andy Hunter

"Hectic" was how Sven Goran Eriksson described his first fortnight back in English football but the pace of change will intensify at Manchester City from today as the Swede commences a £20m spending spree ahead of the new Premiership season.

The former England manager has already spent £17m on four new players since officially replacing Stuart Pearce on 6 July and will shatter the £20m barrier with the capture of Croatian international Vedran Corluka, Real Sociedad defender Javi Garrido and Elano Blumer of Shakhtar Donesk. All three are expected in Manchester to undergo medicals and to discuss personal terms today, and the frenetic transfer activity will continue at the City of Manchester Stadium with the scheduled arrival of £5.75m striker Valeri Bojinov.

Should negotiations prove successful, and City have been reluctant to meet inflating transfer fees despite the money available under new owner Thaksin Shinawatra, the quartet will join record signing Rolando Bianchi, Martin Petrov, Gelson Fernandes and Geovanni at a club where expectations have risen dramatically over the course of one eventful summer.

As with the £4.7m capture of Martin Petrov from under the noses of Tottenham, City are confident of beating a host of Premiership clubs to the signature of £4m-rated Corluka from Dinamo Zagreb having moved for the versatile defender in recent days. The 21-year-old has been capped nine times for Slaven Bilic's national team, including Croatia's 2-0 defeat of England in the European Championship qualifiers last October, and has attracted attention from Spurs and West Ham this summer.

Corluka's transfer is dependent on him obtaining a work permit and he will provide much needed competition at a club in need of reinforcement in central defence and left back, two positions where he has excelled of late.

Another defender expected at City today is 22-year-old Garrido from Real Sociedad. The left-back is on the brink of a £2m move from Chris Coleman's new club and his arrival, plus that of the Croatian, is a firm indication that Eriksson's long-running pursuit of Juventus' Giorgio Chiellini is at an end. City had a £7m offer rejected earlier this week and, along with former Olympiakos striker Nery Castillo, will not pay above their valuation.

"He [Garrido] is a good player, but Manchester City has an interest in him and it is the decision of the player to go to England," confirmed Coleman last night. "I have explained to him that I do not want to sell him, but the financial situation is what it is. We have an understanding over money."

Brazilian international Blumer should be the third and most expensive acquisition by City this week, with the club agreeing a £7.5m fee with Shakhtar Donetsk for the attacking midfielder. The 26-year-old could complete a transfer before Saturday's friendly with Valencia.

Eriksson has been intent on overhauling a poor City attack since his arrival and has turned to Bulgarian Bojinov following Olympiakos' refusal to accept £10m for Castillo, who was sold for a record £14m this week to Shakhtar Donesk.

Bojinov rose to prominence as a teenager and made his Serie A debut with Lecce aged just 16 before earning a £10m transfer to Fiorentina in 2005, where his career has since nose-dived. "I would like to thank manager Eriksson for making this move possible," stated Bojinov, though City are yet to officially confirm their interest in Petrov's international colleague.

Scott Carson and Aiyegbeni Yakubu remain transfer targets for City but Liverpool and Middlesbrough are reluctant to sell.
