Eriksson spends £16.5m on triple addition
A frenetic and expensive day of transfer activity concluded at Manchester City last night with £16.5m spent on three more additions to Sven Goran Eriksson's squad and the club continuing to seek new signings before the start of the new Premiership campaign.
The former England manager's spending spree has now reached £34m after Brazil's attacking midfielder Elano Blumer, the Croatian defender Vedran Corluka and Real Sociedad full-back Javi Garrido signed up to the remarkable transformation at the City of Manchester Stadium. They could well be joined by an eighth Eriksson signing, the £5.75m Bulgarian striker Valeri Bojinov, before close of business today.
Corluka, a 21-year-old who can play in central defence or at right back, has signed a five-year contract in a £7m transfer from Dinamo Zagreb, where he has won nine international caps and given up Champions League football in order to complete his move to the Premiership. "Every boy in Croatia dreams of playing in the Premier League and my dream has come true," he claimed. "Dinamo Zagreb are a great club but I have come to a really big club in Manchester City."
Blumer arrived in an £8m deal from Shakhtar Donetsk and has signed a four-year contract at City just weeks after he was heralded as one of the key influences on Brazil's Copa America victory by their triumphant coach, Dunga, while Garrido has also committed to a four-year deal following his £1.5m move from relegated Sociedad.
Fiorentina forward Bojinov is the next anticipated arrival at City and, although the club are yet to confirm their interest in the player, the 21-year-old claims it is a done deal.
"I'm glad all the problems seem to be resolved and that I can focus on the football," he said. "City are a great club with an exceptional manager and great history and I can't wait to show what I can do."
