Everton manager David Moyes says Marouane Fellaini 'deserves punishment' for seeming to headbutt Ryan Shawcross

David Moyes says Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini deserves any punishment he gets for seeming to headbutt Ryan Shawcross in his team's 1-1 draw at Stoke in the Premier League on Saturday.

Video footage appears to show Fellaini headbutting the Stoke defender and the Belgium international could face a lengthy ban.

"He deserves to get the punishment," Moyes said after the match. "I've seen it, it's a terrible thing to do and I expect him to be punished. It's down to the FA.

"I've told him it's not acceptable and whatever he gets, he and us deserve it."

Match officials missed the incident, which happened while the players jostled for a second-half corner, but the Football Association will review the incident on Monday before deciding whether to charge the midfielder.

A suspension would dent Everton's push for a Champion's League place. The club currently occupy fourth position, with Fellaini their top scorer with seven goals this season, but could be overtaken by Tottenham Hotspur or West Bromwich Albion tomorrow and Arsenal on Monday.

Stoke manager Tony Pulis said he was disappointed the incident was not spotted by referee Mark Halsey.

"If people are not seeing them as red cards, then for goodness sake send a memo around and let us know," he told Sky.

"I've got a lot of respect for Mark...he's been a good referee and I can't tell whether he's seen it or not....if you look at the angles and if he has seen it, again you've got to ask why hasn't he given it?"

There is no guarantee he will face a ban but should it happen, Moyes says he will have let his teammates down - and echoed Pulis' belief it should have been a sending off.

"I think the biggest disappointment, if anything does happen, is that he will have let the team down," he added. "I only normally complain if I think we are getting hard done by and I have said a few things about how I think we have been treated by decisions recently.

"So I think if you are going to talk about it with your own team... Today, it should have been a sending-off in the game.

"If the referee had been able to see it, it should have been."
