Roberto Martinez believes that next season Manchester United will be challenging for every available trophy. The Everton manager, whose team face United this afternoon, argued that with one more transfer window and a season in the Premier League behind him, Louis van Gaal will take some stopping.

“They are capable of challenging for every competition, without a doubt,” Martinez said. “You are looking at a new manager who arrived into this league and it takes time to understand the competitive edge of everything. I think Louis van Gaal will be ready next season to challenge for every single trophy.

“He is someone who has won everything. You are looking at a manager who has been able to adapt in Spain and Germany and been successful in his own country. Now he has had to adapt to Manchester United and the demands and expectations they have had. He is going to be successful whatever happens.”

Van Gaal countered by saying that, compared to his time at Barcelona and Bayern Munich, where he won trophies in his first season, the turnaround at Old Trafford has been relatively slow.

“The process hasn’t worked that quickly here because, when I was with other teams, I had already won titles by now,” he said.

“Normally, our philosophy shall be to win titles but we have had to make big changes here, not just in the philosophy but in the structure of the club. I have a period of three years here and I am sure I will win a championship or a title within three years. Maybe we can do that next year.”
