Former Manchester United and England defender Gary Neville has faith that British record signing Angel Di Maria will succeed at Old Trafford.

After initially impressing following a £59.7million move from Real Madrid, Di Maria has struggled for form and has not started a game under Louis van Gaal since the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal in the FA Cup on 9 March.

Di Maria has three goals and 10 assists in the Premier League this season, but much more was expected from the 27-year-old.

Despite his problems, Manchester United legend Neville "believes" Di Maria will be a success at the club.

“United do need wide players,” Neville told Sky Sports. “Ashley Young has had a fantastic season but, as much as he’s done well out there in recent months, Juan Mata isn’t a wide right player.

“It will be interesting to see what happens with Angel Di Maria as well.

“Actually, I believe in Di Maria as a player. We’ve watched him a lot for Real Madrid and you could see his level of performance was outstanding.

“That’s not happened this season and you’re thinking Ashley Young has done better this season, (Maraoune) Fellaini’s been better, Mata’s done better.

“Is Di Maria going to do better under Van Gaal?”
