How much did Premier League teams pay for each goal last season?
The leading scorers per wage in the Premier League last season were not champions Leicester City
Chelsea spent £215.6m on players last season. That’s four times more than Leicester City, who won the Premier League and scored more goals. Did your top-flight club’s payroll reflect the team’s true value?
The Independent took each Premier League club's wage bill for the 2015-16 season and divided it by the number of goals scored in the same campaign by that team.
You might assume Leicester made the best deal this year but that has not proven the case. With £555,556 shelled out per goal, Bournemouth are the Premier League club who paid the least for a goal last season.
Despite the relative bargain, Eddie Howe's side still finished 16th. When we look at how little they spent compared to goals scored, it can be appreciated just how well the Cherries did in their debut season in the top-flight.
At the other end of the table, the owners of Manchester United had to hand over more than £4million per goal in a bid to keep supporters happy.
Aston Villa are arguably the biggest losers. The Midlands club paid more than 15 other teams last season, but still finished at the bottom of the table.
Roberto Di Matteo's side are now preparing for Championship football next season.
