England manager Roy Hodgson is mulling over the merits of calling up Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy for the June internationals against the Republic of Ireland and Slovenia.

The 28-year-old has delivered several typically industrious displays for the Foxes as Nigel Pearson's men continue to haul themselves clear from relegation.

Vardy was watched by the Three Lions backroom staff after playing his part in the 5-3 demolition of Manchester United back in September, but Hodgson's interest faded as Leicester went 13 games without a victory before Christmas.

However the England boss was in the stands at the King Power Stadium on Saturday as the East Midlands club swept Southampton aside to register their sixth Premier League victory in seven matches.

Vardy provided an assist for Riyad Mahrez's second goal in a 2-0 win after being nominated for the Player of the Month award for April. According to the Daily Mail, he is now in contention for a stunning call-up to the national side.

Two vital strikes in the victories over West Bromwich Albion and Burnley last month propelled the Foxes out of the bottom three having been rooted to the foot of the table since November.

Hodgson, meanwhile, is considering his options in attacking positions with both Harry Kane and Danny Ings set to represent the under-21s this summer.

Any decision to call-up the Leicester striker would come as a shock to many, especially if he is chosen ahead of Queens Park Rangers forward Charlie Austin.

The former Burnley man has scored 17 goals despite Rangers' relegation to the Championship and a first England cap continues to allude him.

But Vardy, who five years ago was playing for non-league Stocksbridge Park Steels, could offer the national side an injection of pace up-front which few in the top flight can rival.

The former Fleetwood Town striker's rise to prominence remains one of football's more romantic of tales and securing Premier League survival could just be the start for the Sheffield-born frontman.

Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck are expected to be the first names on Hodgson's squad list but the lack of first-team opportunities given to Rickie Lambert, alongside his Liverpool teammate Daniel Sturridge's recent injury woe, means new options may now be explored.
