Chelsea defender and captain John Terry has agreed a one-year contract extension to remain at the club.

The 33-year-old was out of contract in the summer, but he has put pen to paper on a new deal that will keep him at the Champions League semi-finalists until the end of next season.

"I'm delighted to have signed an extension to my contract with Chelsea taking me into my 20th year with the club," he told the club's official website.

"I'd like to thank the fans and club for their continued support, and the manager who was instrumental for me the last season."

Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay said: "We are very pleased John, who is an undoubted Chelsea legend, will continue to lead the team next season, as he has done for so many years with unrivalled achievement.

"Both Chelsea FC and John have been clear throughout that we wanted his outstanding career at the club to continue, and it is important the matter has been concluded so soon after the end of the season, allowing us to look forward to and plan for 2014/15."

It is believed that Terry was demanding a longer contract with a view to ending his career at Stamford Bridge, but agreed to the conditions due to his love of the club.

Reports earlier today claimed manager Jose Mourinho was keen on keeping hold of Terry, with the former England captain skippering the Chelsea side during both of Mourinho’s spells with the London club.

The Portuguese had reported back to the Chelsea board on Monday with his opinion on the futures of Terry, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole, with all three running out of contract this summer. Only Lampard, despite being the oldest out of the trio, will go to the World Cup in Brazil after Cole was overlooked in favour of Leighton Baines and Luke Shaw.

Terry had already announced his international retirement.

Next season will be Terry's 17th in the first-team.

The defender, who joined the club age 14, has played 621 games for Chelsea, scoring 57 goals, and has been captain on 490 occasions.

He has won three Premier League titles, the 2012 Champions League, 2013 Europa League, five FA Cups (2000, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012), two League Cups (2005, 2007) and the Community Shield (2005, 2009).
