Jose Mourinho will be offered a whopping £20million annual salary by Manchester United according to a newspaper report on Saturday morning.

The former Chelsea manager, sacked just six months after winning the Premier League title last season, is the odds-on favourite to take over from Louis van Gaal this summer.

According to The Sun, the deal offered to the Portuguese - £60m over three years - would make him the highest paid manager ever.

The deal would dwarf the expected £15m annual salary that Manchester City will give Pep Guardiola when he arrives at the Etihad from Bayern Munich in the summer.

Mourinho's potential deal is double what Van Gaal, under pressure with Manchester United currently in sixth place in the top flight, currently earns at Old Trafford.

The report also claims that although there is no pre-contract agreement in place between Mourinho and Manchester United, the club already have a verbal agreement in place.

The Sun claim that Mourinho will take over at the end of the season in May.

Mourinho was the highest paid manager in the Premier League while he was at Chelsea, although he wasn't reported to be earning more than £13m-per-year.
