Jose Mourinho is already eyeing a return to management just days after being sacked by Chelsea, with Manchester United his preferred choice should the top job become available.

As revealed by the Independent, Mourinho remains determined to take the manager’s seat at Old Trafford should Louis van Gaal leave the club, and the agency that represents the Portuguese has released a statement on Saturday morning confirming his desire to get back into the game as soon as possible.

The statement read: "He will not be taking a sabbatical, he isn't tired, he doesn't need it.

"He is very positive and is already looking forward."

52-year-old Mourinho saw his second spell with Chelsea ended on Thursday after a 10-minute meeting with club owner Roman Abramovich, with ‘The Special One’ paying the price for Chelsea’s shortcomings this season.

With the club languishing down in 16th position in what is currently the worst title defence in Premier League history, Abramovich took the decision to change the manager in a bid to provoke a response from the player, with technical director Michael Emenalo identifying a “palpable discord between manager and players” as the reasoning behind his exit.

The statement also rejected Chelsea’s claim that Mourinho left by mutual consent, with Mourinho confirming that he was sacked by the club’s board without agreeing to leave himself.

"Jose Mourinho is pleased that he returned to Chelsea because he was able to give the fans another Premier League title, which they had not won for many years," the statement added.

"He is immensely proud of his eight trophies at Chelsea, and thanks the fans for all their support throughout his two spells at the club.

"During his career, Jose has sometimes chosen to leave a club, but only at Chelsea has the club decided that he should leave."

The statement also confirmed that Mourinho will remain at his Knightsbridge home in the capital, and he will not be attending any high-profile matches in a bid to lessen any speculation about his future or who he could replace.

"He (Jose) will not be attending any high-profile games because he wants to discourage any speculation about his future," the statement read.

"Jose will remain living in London and hopes he and his family will be given the opportunity to do this privately."
